MEC at E3

MECBlogE3Expo

A quiet year at E3 with no major hardware or game announcements lead to a slightly downbeat conference initially but once people got past that and games like’ Halo 4’, ‘Watch Dog’s, ‘Black Ops 2’ and ‘The Last of Us’ started generating decent levels of buzz things picked up.

It will be an interesting year for Nintendo with the launch of the new Wii U console which will boast graphics on a par with PS3 and Xbox 360.  Announcements on release date and price are still to come but the industry is ripe with anticipation around how the Wii U can freshen up the console market.

The growth of digital and downloadable content (DLC) was evident in the massive booths Wargaming.net and GREE had in the conference centre in downtown LA – impressive statements and clearly an arena that will continue to increase in size as  more and more publishers look to capitalize on monthly subscription models or the burgeoning micro-transaction space popularized by social gaming phenomenon like Farmville.

Next year promises much with the true next generation of consoles set to be announced alongside high-end PC demo’s giving a glimpse of the future for those systems and, finally, the absence of the long-awaited ‘GTA V’ seems to indicate a 2013 release date which will keep everyone on their toes!
